Stoic Prose Poetry on Demand in Asheville, NC – Meet the Man Who Inspired Me Before Breakfast

September 28, 2017 Leave a Comment

If you want to be inspired before breakfast, well that’s exactly what this prose poet will do. On a recent trip to Asheville, NC, my husband and I walked by this man, Dave, typing up on-demand prose poetry on a vintage typewriter. I knew I had to meet him but was not sure what topic to choose. We decided to write three topics down on our napkin at breakfast and let him pick one.

When Dave picked a napkin, the choice was revealed – to write a poem about his own personal story. I was a little worried at first, because Dave’s reaction seemed disappointed. I was hoping I did not offend him by asking him to share something personal, but he began typing, drawing a crowd.

He wrote us a poem describing his experience as an Asheville “Statue”, one of the many types of street performing artists you will find in downtown Asheville. After reading the poem, he told us more about the poem’s backstory and his struggle to find a place to stand as an artist. I was shocked to learn how much goes into finding a place to physically stand and legally speak.

Now I know why his face changed when he saw the topic selection. He likely isn’t disappointed in the topic choice, but in having to hold back so many words. He told us he would soon be moving to New Orleans, and I hope to see him there one day. Until then, I have this piece of his story that he graciously allowed me to share…

Hummingbird Banding: More than a Bird’s Eye View

September 2, 2017 Leave a Comment

Hummingbird Banding

Hummingbird Festivals are the place to be for hummingbird lovers…

A lifelong fascination with hummingbirds led to my recent attendance at a local hummingbird festival. For hummingbird lovers, the festival is a must! Hand crafted and unique hummingbird feeders are available for purchase, plus there are tons of educational activities to participate in. Probably the most noteworthy activity is the Hummingbird Banding experience.

What is Hummingbird Banding?

Before the Hummingbird Festival, I had never even heard of Hummingbird Banding. Hummingbird banding is the process of catching hummingbirds, marking them with an identifying band and then releasing them. The process allows highly trained and certified individuals to study the movement and behaviors of hummingbirds in order to ensure long-term hummingbird survival. Currently, only around 150 people in the United States and Canada are authorized to band hummingbirds.

I have to admit, when I first read about hummingbird banding, I wasn’t sure how to feel about it. So I decided to go to the Hummingbird Festival to learn more about the process. I got to meet Susan Campbell, one of the few authorized hummingbird banders in the continent. She is everything you would want a hummingbird bander to be – extremely intelligent, eager to answer questions, gentle with the hummingbirds and fully decked out in hummingbird attire.

Susan banded several hummingbirds that day, stopping to ask each and every question asked. The enthusiastic crowd consisted of all ages. We all watched Susan go through the banding process, to eventually release the bird back into the wild. She also promised to release the hummingbirds early if she sensed the first sign of stress.

Onlookers could even “adopt” a hummingbird for $20, which allowed donors to participate in releasing the adopted hummingbird. The experience was magical.

A hope for increased funding…

After attending the event and reading more about the process, I certainly feel more educated about banding. However, I do think the price of adopting hummingbirds should be increased. Funding is essential for hummingbird research and it would be great to see the crowds more limited per bird. Hopefully the annual event will continue to raise awareness and funds.

National Dog Day 2017: A Perfect Day to Adopt a Dog or Spend Time with your Pups

August 26, 2017 Leave a Comment

Happy National Dog Day 2017!

Here at Puppies and Pina Coladas, we truly LOVE dogs! We rescued our dogs and they have changed our lives. A day to celebrate dogs is so important because many people do not know what a joy dogs are. There are millions of dogs that need a home and if you have room in your heart, visiting your local shelter or contacting a local rescue could change your life in ways you can’t even imagine.

You can also check out PetFinder.com or AdoptAPet.com if you are searching for a specific breed. Both of those sites led our family to the rescue groups where we adopted our Havanese and Maltipoo. So many people are shocked to learn that our dogs are rescues but just about any breed of dog can be adopted if you are patient.

National Dog Day

If you decide to adopt this weekend, be sure and check out my list of new puppy essentials before you go. I wish I would have had a shopping list like this instead of having to leave my new pup in the middle of the night because I forgot essential items!

Broken Things You Can Sell on eBay

August 21, 2017 Leave a Comment

Next time something breaks, you may want to hang on to it. Electronics can bring in serious cash on eBay, even if they do not work! You might be surprised at the amount of money some rusty old items can bring. The links below are completed listings and show the price items have recently sold for.

Check out a few of the broken things you can sell on eBay…

Electronics:

  • Broken Phones: iPhones take the lead here, but there are many others as well. Older phones tend to do better in lots.
  • Broken Remote Controls: Smart Remotes are on the higher selling end but you can bring in a nice amount from vintage remotes as well. TV repairmen often buy and fix vintage remotes since many customers typically do not want to learn new remote controls.
  • Broken Camera: Broken vintage cameras can bring just as much cash as newer models.
  • Broken Speakers: Broken speakers ranging from portable Bluetooth speakers to huge audio speakers.
  • Video Game Consoles: The older the better.
  • Broken Headphones: Beats Headphones appear to be the biggest moneymaker in headphones brands.

Odds, Ends & Knick-Knacks:

  • Broken Door Knobs: Crafters love broken door knobs! There are so many adorable projects to be made with vintage doorknobs – just look at all of the ideas on Pinterest.
  • Broken Jewelry in a lot such as gold or necklaces: If you have a lot of jewelry, you probably have a drawer or an old jewelry box with odds and ends just waiting to be cleaned out. Anything from broken necklaces to buttons and pins can bring in money, especially in a lot!
  • Broken Watch: From vintage to modern styles, broken watches are consistent sellers on eBay.
  • Broken Musical Instruments: String instruments in need of repair appear to do very well.
  • Broken Eye Glasses: Higher end frames seem to do especially good, as well as lots of vintage glasses with gold frames.

Kitchen, Tools & Crafts:

  • Broken KitchenAid Mixer: I do not hear of KitchenAid Mixers breaking too often, but if you happen to have one, they hold a whopping 50% of their value – even broken!
  • Broken Coffeemaker: Keurig and Espresso machines are especially good sellers. Even broken machines tend to return about a third of the cost, which is pretty amazing!
  • Broken Tools: Power tools such as name brand drills, saws and impact wrenches are consistent sellers. Sets of wrenches and sockets do well in lots too.
  • Broken Sewing Machine: I was honestly shocked at the amount of money people pay for broken sewing machines! Many sell for well over $100.

Outdoor Sports Items:

  • Broken Fishing Rods: Don’t toss those broken fishing rods until you check eBay. Brands vary greatly!
  • Broken Binoculars: New and vintage broken binoculars have equal selling potential.
  • Broken Knives: Broken pocket knives in lots can do very well.

Sell $180 worth of items you probably have at home…
